Overall Comments
I can see the preparation
and consideration that you have gone into to produce this work. The ‘brief’
provides you with the parameters to work within, the outline and the
requirements are clear with an identified goal.
You have demonstrated solid
technical and visual skills. Your ability to work with people is obvious. The
images produced seem to be what you proposed as suitable for the client
requirements and you have a coherent body of work to meet the brief.
The reflection you provided
is honest about the process and you are developing your own personal style. Keep
working on the refinement of your images, the lighting is a strength.
You have done some
excellent research into a large variety of photographers and this has informed
your approach. You have been to some powerful exhibitions and it was good to
see you questioning not only the work but also the method of presentation and
curatorial decisions but also how this challenged your experience. Keep
exploring this area and the theoretical elements.

As this was a promotional brief on a development
that has not happened yet, your research into other similar projects was
excellent. This exploration into the various outcomes of a variety of sites
provided a good visual grounding to provide your image portfolio.
You
have engaged in the idea of exploring a variety of environments and were
reactive
in the challenges. The complex nature of the access to the artists was a
difficulty
and your committed approach made some of this access possible
within
the logistics of the project. This is the real challenge of working in the more
engaged
and collaborative manner.
Getting
model release forms was a professional approach.
You
reflect well on the challenge of editing your images with the client brief in
mind.
The prints presented are of a good quality and would be very suitable for
publication.

This
image shows the complete concentration of the artist. The line of the brush to
the eye is a little alarming but it does drive your view of the work. It is a
strong crop.
Not actually cropped...lucky enough to be able to get that close! Agree the lineup of brush to eye is a little dramatic and I did consider using a similiar but less dramatic version before sticking with this one..
P1015
This
sets the scene of the area and it does show the architecture and history
elements well, I am pleased you did not crop the image further and cut through
any of the arches.

This
is an interesting practice and it is really good to see it captured. It does
seem that the light is one the back of the artists head more than his face and
in some ways I want to see more of his art. Using a reflector or some bounce
flash in this type of situation would even out the lighting. I had a number of images to choose from but opted for this one as showing the practice better . Agree though, that the artist is not that well lit. I didn't have a flash unit with me on the day and came by this studio by accident. That said, a very useful reminder to think ahead better and travel with a flash unit etc..and very helpful to see the suggestion of using a reflector or bounce flash in this type of situation as this is an area of photography where my lack of experience does show..
P1023
This
image really is like a fly on the wall approach, it is well lit and there is
good detail in the white areas.
P1017
Another
capture of the artist at work. A real documentary approach of looking on a the
working environment.
P1018
This
image gives a real sense of a creative space but isn’t about one artist. It is
bravely composed and cropped and in light of your brief I feel this was most
successful. This was my favourite image for the very reason that it conjured up the studio feel and relied less on the personality of the artist .

A
solid capture of the artist at work, it is a nicely cropped image although you
can’t see the face so it does look a little static. Yes, it is rather static...I guess that I included it in case the client wanted a very obvious image using a medium other than paint..
P1022
A
more active image and again an artist at work.
P1026
The
image is interesting and is nicely lit. The various interesting items provide
some good visual challenges.
P1016
Showing
the arched space in use and the potential fits very well with the brief.
P1020
The
detail of the birds in the foreground against the dark clothed people works and
again explores the space without the personality of the people.
P1010
The
café area looks quirky and fun and certainly busy which again fits with your
client brief.
You
have a number of strong images here and they are all a celebration of the
space. I would though suggest you return to your brief and think about the
message you want to convey. The detail of the areas, which show the trace of
artistic practice, work really well. When you have too many images of the
artists themselves it does lend itself to being more of a feature piece about
them. A good way to bring this around would be to describe them as ‘case
studies’ of the use of spaces similar to the one being proposed. That would
make them really valid and useful.
This is an interesting point - I hadn't thought that too many images of artists themselves might actually begin to say more about the artist rather than the artistic practice - obvious when you think about it. I like the idea of turning this round by presenting them as 'case studies' ...
Consider
also how this would be presented. You have included some captions but maybe
some more words would make this really work. You seem to have done such a lot
of research and have an understanding of the development this would seem a
natural progression!
Ouch! I hadn't thought about how to present these images to the client in printed form..I had visualised that I would be presenting them face to face - a verbal rather than written presentation. A little unrealistic perhaps..I'll work up a written presentation.
Coursework
Demonstration of technical and Visual Skills, Demonstration of
Creativity
Your proposed briefing is quite complex as you have
a real task of not only providing images to present the idea of something that
hasn’t happened yet but also to tell the story of how this will impact upon the
community.
Your additional explorations in the exercises are
reflective and this does seem to inform your photography as you work.
Research
Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis
You
have considered that you have met the brief. It would be good to see if you
could visualize how these images could actually be used, consider getting these
images published or used as your intended in your ‘brief’. It seems a shame to
not make use of this as it could be a real project, your vision of the place.Like the idea of getting some of the images printed but not quite sure how to go about this one ..
Learning Log
Context, reflective thinking, critical thinking, analysis
You have responded well to the exhibitions and
begun to unpick some of the ideas about the messages various artists have been
addressing in their work. Your questioning about the place of Leibovitz’s work
with the idea of celebrity is good and this could be further explored as it is
an interesting point. You
have done much excellent relevant visual research into a variety of
photographic approaches and they have been informative and inspirational to
you. This is really good practice and you are developing a solid knowledge of a
variety of photographic styles.
The blog is clear and you have provided much
evidence of your process and reflecting on your findings with searching and
honest evaluations. This is good to see. You could align your exercises with
the assignments to make it a little clearer as you have done so much work it is
a lot to negotiate.
Suggested reading/viewing
Context
In light of the motivation of your project I would
suggest you look at the work by the artists who won the 2015 Turner prize –
Assemble Had a brief look at their work when the prize was announced but will go back and look more closely..
This way of working, is referred to as Socially
Engaged Art Practice as is very in at the moment.
http://www.asocialpractice.com/
This further explores the motivation of photography as a social practice. Will definitely check this out ...
http://www.the-aop.org (information on model
release forms/ contracts/ copyright etc) The book ‘Beyond the Lens’ is a vital
tool for working photographers. Yes, I came across this earlier and have the online version..
Pointers for the next assignment / assessment
- Your engagement in the assignments is a real strength, continue to develop this. Keep exploring the questions that arise from your reflections, these could be technical exploration as well as more theoretical issues.
- Prints from this final shoot are expected for your final assessment and those submitted are of a good standard, images on media such as CD are not accepted for assessment.
