Assignment 5 - a project brief

HOT WALLS  PHOTO ASSIGNMENT

HotWalls  is a development project to transform largely–disused arches in the Hot Walls  area of Old Portsmouth. The Hotwalls, as the arches are known, were used as artillery barracks and soldiers quarters in the 1850s. The site has a real sense of place and communal heritage with real potential for redefining the area as a public space and cultural destination.

However, the proposal to convert the arches into active use i.e. studios and a ‘brasserie’ type offer has not been met with favour  by some local residents who have vehemently argued the need to respect the history of the structure.

OBJECTIVE
To create a portfolio of images to:

      • capture the historic distinctiveness of the HotWalls area
      • demonstrate the range of creative industries, businesses and activities  that could be sensitively accommodated within the arches

To use these images to help achieve:

      • A better understanding amongst the local community of what the projected transformation could achieve for the area, its residents and visitors
      • An insight of what the space can offer those working in the creative industries who are looking locally for usable and affordable space to rent.

What do we want people to feel when looking at these images?

      • Reassurance that the history of the HotWalls can be respected by the proposed transformation
      • Interest and a desire to know more about the studio space and how it can be used
What do we want people to do after seeing the images?

      • Follow the project’s blog
      • Ask for more information
      • Ask to be kept informed of progress
      • Express interest in using the space
